Residual Bitumen

Surface detail of one of Suncor’s tailings ponds. While the residual bitumen floating on the water (escaped from the bitumen extraction process) is quite dramatic, the brown water/sludge might be of greater concern. Its waterborne silt, saturated with carcinogens and other toxins, is an integral part of the bitumen mining process.
